Links: What I Read Today (22nd October)

Sharing links to a couple of things I read today. While I struggle with a patience block and am unable to write, others are busy creating amazing content :)

Callie Shell has some amazing photographs of current US Presidential candidate Barack Obama that are simply a don’t miss. Doesn’t matter who you support or even if you don’t care, the photographs are simply amazing.

An interesting interview by Graham Johnson for Vice Magazine about SUleyman Ergun, who was supposed to be the most powerful drug dealers in the world at the time. Really interesting read!

DMC: Planet Caravan – Black Sabbath

One of the most interesting songs that Black Sabbath ever made. From their first album, Planet Caravan epitomizes the trip more than any 90 minute epic song created by a psychadelic band can ever do, as far as I am concerned. Try closing your eyes while the song is playing and let the music take the mind along with it on an amazing journey.

Heard In The Loo: Stand By Me.

So, here’s some background for this post. The place where I work, or as we call it in regular terms, office, has something unique for employees’ to feel nice about where they work (They have a lot of things to do this, but I chose to elaborate on this one). They play music in the loo. While this may be comforting for some and may even help them do what a man’s gotta do (no gender bias intended – I simply don’t know about the other side), to me it’s an annoyance that has turned out to be a source of amusement.

Everyday I get to hear a song that, given the situation and context, is totally hilarious and sometimes inappropriate. So, since this is where I “share” what I feel, I have created a new category to put these songs into. Remember when u read this – I heard this when I was standing at a stall in the loo (descriptive, yes but necessary).

So here it is, the first installment of Heard In The Loo:

Song: Stand By Me.

Really? Would you really like to listen to someone singing this song when u are infact, standing in the loo?

DMC: I Don’t Wanna Be Me – Type O Negative.

This is one of the funniest videos to any Type O-Negative song I have ever heard. Kind of creepy but funny.

Versus …

“I Build, I build, a house I build,
A house to save the sins I willed.
To keep away the world I killed,
I build, I build, a house I build.

I dream, I dream, a wall I dream,
A wall to face my soul I dream.
To reign my needs and wants supreme,
The wall to close around my dream.

I wait, I wait, right here I wait,
For the one who can, I wait.
The one who’ll stop the hate, I wait,
To close the open gate, I wait.

I die, I die, at last I die,
I close my eyes, my heart, I die.
And here forevermore I lie,
And nevermore will these thoughts fly.
I lie, I dream of peace and sigh.
I build, I dream, I wait, I die.”

DMC: Your Woman – White Town

I still remember hearing this song for the first time when I was in the 8th standard on MTV. That was a very short period of my life where the TV was in my room and I would stay up late to watch post-”The Grind” MTV where they would show songs/ artists who didn’t reach mainstream appeal in India/ Asia but were pretty good and was the time when I discovered such gems such as the song above.

White Town, BTW, is a one person band – the one person being a dude named Jyoti Mishra. Mostly known for that one song, White Town has some very hard edged but understated lyrics and the groove for this song immediately hooked me on to it.

Check it out.

DMC: Dooba Dooba – Silk Route

Since I can’t think of things to write about most of the time, I am going to try and update the blog with the song that runs through my head every day. :) Yeah, its lame and lazy, I know.

The Invitation.

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s desire.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals, or have become shriveled and closed for the fear of future pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it, fade it, or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, or to remember the limitations of human beings.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you’re telling me is true. I want to know if you disappoint another to be true to yourself, if you can bear the accusations of betrayal and not betray your own soul.

I want to know if you can be faithful and therefore be trustworthy. I want to know if you can see beauty, even when it is not pretty every day, and if you can source your life from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure, yours or mine, and still stand on the edge of the lake and shout to the silver moon

“Yes!”

It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you are now or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself, and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments Your life is not a coincidence, it is a reflection of you.

RIP Evan Tanner.

The only person who I have never met, but have loved like a brother and cannot forget.

There is a place in my thoughts that can never be forgotten. There is a void in my mind that can never be filled. RIP Champ.

RIP, my friend.

“I will do nothing lightly. When I walk, I will walk heavily. When I fight, I will fight with conviction. When I speak, I will speak strongly. When I feel, I will feel everything. When I love, I will love with everything.”
